Recovering after a hailstorm
Step-by-step recovery for wounded trees, following SKUAST-Kashmir advice.
Hail wounds leaves, fruit and bark and opens the door to infection. Act quickly once the weather clears.
First
- Drain standing water quickly. Waterlogging suffocates roots and helps fungal disease.
- Gently shake trees to dislodge hail and debris.
- Prune broken or damaged branches with clean tools and dress the cuts with Bordeaux or Chaubatia paste.
- Support partially uprooted trees so roots can settle.
Protect against disease
- Once the weather clears, apply a protective fungicide recommended for your stage.
- Spray in cool, dry periods using a fine mist.
- About three days after the fungicide, SKUAST-Kashmir suggests a 0.2% urea spray (200 g per 100 L of water) to help recovery.
- Consider a micronutrient spray after 10 to 15 days.
Clean up
- Collect and dispose of fallen leaves, fruit, blossoms and twigs by burying or composting, to reduce the source of infection.
- Keep the orchard ventilated and the soil aerated.
