Cold nights and frost at bloom
Why bloom is the risky time and what you can do.
Relevant stages: Pink Bud, Flowering.
Open blossoms are the most frost-sensitive stage. Buds are most vulnerable just before, during and after bloom.
Rough thresholds at full bloom
University research (for a freeze lasting about 30 minutes) puts the losses at about 10% of flowers at around -2 degrees C and about 90% at around -4 degrees C. Earlier bud stages tolerate colder temperatures, and the exact numbers vary with variety and how long the cold lasts.
- Watch the Tonight low on the Home screen during pink bud and flowering.
- Frost tends to settle in low spots. Trees there are at higher risk.
- Keep the orchard floor short and clear, since bare, moist ground releases more heat overnight than tall grass.
- If a cold night is forecast, prepare in advance rather than at night.
- Note damaged blossoms and adjust your thinning and feeding plans afterwards.
