The apple orchard year at a glance
A season-long map of what your trees are doing and what usually needs your attention.
Apple growing follows the trees. Applefy splits the year into 12 growth stages, from waking buds to the last weeks before picking.
Winter to spring
- Delayed dormancy: buds swell. Finish pruning, clean up the orchard and check drainage.
- Green tip and tight cluster: first leaves show and flower buds bunch together. Early feeding and early protection against disease begin here.
Bloom
- Pink bud, flowering, petal fall: the most sensitive weeks. Scab protection, bees, frost and rain all matter most now.
Summer
- Fruit let and fruit development I to IV: fruit is set and growing. Thin fruit, feed with calcium, keep mites and leaf diseases in check, and manage soil moisture.
Before harvest
- Pre-harvest: control fruit drop, protect storage quality and plan picking.
