Site and soil basics for apples
The conditions apples need to grow well, and what to fix before planting.

What apples like
- Well-drained, deep soil. Standing water damages roots.
- A soil pH that is not strongly acid or alkaline. Around 6 to 7 suits most orchards.
- Good air movement and sun. Cold air pooling in hollows raises frost risk at bloom.
Before planting
- Check drainage after rain. Make channels if water stands.
- Test the soil (see the soil testing article) and correct problems early.
- Choose varieties and rootstocks suited to your altitude and space.
Existing orchards
Keep drainage clear every year. Ensure proper drainage is listed as a routine task for the dormant and green tip stages.
