Integrated pest management in simple words
Watch first, spray only when needed, and use the right product.
Relevant stages: Tight Cluster, Flowering, Petal Fall, Fruit Let.
IPM means using several tools, not spraying by calendar alone.
- Monitor. Walk the orchard regularly. Check the underside of leaves.
- Use traps. Pheromone traps at 8 to 10 per hectare help you monitor the leaf blotch miner (at flowering) and fruit borers (at fruit let).
- Act at thresholds. The guide uses an acaricide when mites reach about 4 to 5 per leaf at petal fall, and above 10 per leaf later.
- Keep the orchard clean. Remove debris and fallen fruit.
- Choose the right product. Do not use a broad insecticide if you only have mites.
- Rotate products so pests do not become resistant.
Regular inspection at tight cluster helps control overwintering pests early.
