Pruning bearing trees
Keeping mature trees open, productive and easy to spray.
Relevant stages: Delayed Dormancy.
- Remove dead, broken and diseased wood first.
- Cut out branches that cross or rub.
- Thin the crowded centre so light reaches inside.
- Renew old, weak fruiting wood gradually rather than all at once.
- Keep the tree height workable for spraying and picking.
Use thinning cuts (removing a whole branch at its base) more than heading cuts. Always work from the top down.
