Pruning & training

Training young trees

Building a strong framework in the first years.

Relevant stages: Delayed Dormancy.

  • Decide the tree form for your orchard (for example central leader) and stick to it.
  • Keep one strong central trunk and choose well-spaced side branches.
  • Favour wide branch angles. Very narrow angles split under fruit load.
  • Remove competing leaders and crossing branches early.
  • Do not let young trees carry a heavy crop before the framework is built.
  • Stake and tie carefully so the trunk grows straight.

Good training in the first three years pays off for decades.

General guidance. Always read product labels and consult an agronomist for problems specific to your orchard.
